Bad arm physio is just basic stretching with ZERO strengthening exercises for the next month. One of the most popular myths that I still see going around is that eating small frequent meals throughout the day increases (or “stokes”) your metabolism. The body of evidence on this is pretty conclusive that it is in fact a myth. • The logic behind it is that as you are constantly eating, the metabolism has to constantly be working to break down the food. All caloric containing foods require energy to break down, this is called the thermogenic effect of food (or TEF for short) so at first glance you could see where this makes sense. • However, TEF is determined by the amount of food and food composition. That means frequent small meals will elicit frequent small increases in TEF, where as larger meals that are more spaced out will have fewer, but larger, rises in TEF and if the food is equated there is negligible difference. • The other component, food composition, can also dictate TEF response. Protein requires the most energy to break down which means it has the highest TEF response. It also helps satiety which is why including more protein in your diet can be a win win. Carbohydrates come in second, and fats have the lowest TEF response. • However, just because this idea is a myth doesn’t mean there’s no reason to not do frequent small meals. For some, it can decrease hunger and reduce appetite which can play a large role in dietary adherence.
